Four Easy Ways To Exercise While OTR

Post Date - Mar 15, 2023

We all want to live a healthy lifestyle, but it can be overwhelming to plan and commit to a total overhaul of your lifestyle. Boyd Bros. cares about our drivers and setting them up for success professionally and personally so we’ve created some goals for you to slowly but surely adopt a lifestyle committed to your health and wellness!

Stretches

This is one of the easiest exercise options for truck drivers to work into their lives while on the road. Stretches don’t require a large amount of space and can comfortably be completed in your cab. You can incorporate them during a planned stop along your route to get you moving during the day or before heading to bed. Either way, the benefits that come along with daily stretching are endless! You lower your risk of injury, access a better range of motion, support blood flow to your muscles, improve your flexibility and increase your exercise performance (one of the reasons this a great first goal!)

Increase movement time

Simply stepping up the time you spend moving each day is a great goal to get you on the right track. The CDC recommends adults get 30 minutes of exercise daily. As a truck driver, you spend the majority of your day in the driver’s seat, trying to get from point A to point B as quickly and safely as possible. That makes it easy for joint issues and conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure to manifest. Finding a scenic rest stop and spending 30 or so minutes walking can make all the difference in your health and wellness.

Incorporate exercise gear

Resistance bands are a truck driver’s favorite exercise tool. They’re easy to use and easy to store without taking up much space in your cab, unlike other exercise equipment. Resistance bands are extremely versatile and have been deemed the one exercise tool that everyone should have! They can be used for several exercises including joint mobilization which can help ease the pain in stiff hip or shoulder joints. You can also use them to train the muscles in your arms, legs, and back without any additional equipment!

Visit a fitness center

We know visiting a fitness center can sometimes feel intimidating but, after completing the first three of these fitness goals, you’re more than ready to get into a gym. A huge advantage to life on the road is having access to thousands of fitness centers! One U.S. truck driver on his own fitness journey committed to visiting all the locations of a certain gym as he travelled across the nation. While an undertaking as huge as that one may not fit into your life, checking out a gym while on the road is a surefire and exciting way to take your physical health to the next level!
