As Father's Day approaches, Boyd Bros. honors the incredible men who balance the demands of fatherhood with the challenges of a career on the open road. A couple of examples of that on our team are Sam Richardson and Adrian McGhie, two dedicated Boyd Bros. truck drivers who share their journeys as truck driver dads and the successful careers they’ve built.
Sam Richardson, a seasoned driver with Boyd Bros. for four years, is the proud father of three children. Reflecting on his career, Sam remembers fondly the times he’s been able to bring his son along for the ride.
“It’s a blessing to be able to take them on the road with me,” Sam said. “It keeps me motivated and for me to know that he wants to learn more about what I do. It makes me want to work even harder and push myself to the limit.”
Sam's consistent dedication to his work and family is deeply rooted in the lessons he learned from his own father. “My dad taught me my work ethic,” he said. “He showed me that the only way you are going to be able to eat is you have to get to work.”
Despite the challenges that can come from being away from home and your loved ones, Sam has found ways to stay connected with his family, emphasizing the importance of communication and routine. “They keep my location on their phones,” Sam said.” By working mornings and nights I’m able to call and check on them before I start my day and end my day.”
For Adrian McGhie, who has been with Boyd Bros. for a year and seven months, fatherhood brings its own unique set of challenges and rewards. As a father of three, Adrian is aware of the sacrifices involved in his profession, yet he finds joy in the moments spent with his children when he is off the road.
“When I’m on the road before I start, I make sure to call home to check in on them,” Adrian said. “When I’m off the road, I enjoy being with them, playing with them, taking them out, and I really appreciate that time with them.”
Adrian, like Sam, credits his own father for instilling a strong work ethic in him, a value that continues to drive his career today. “My father never stopped working. From dawn to dusk. I learned my work ethic from him,” Adrian said.
Both Sam and Adrian celebrate Father’s Day in their own special ways, even if they happen to be on the road.
“They make sure I get phone calls from them wishing me Happy Father’s Day. They let me know how much they appreciate me, and I tell them how much I appreciate them,” Sam shared. “If it wasn’t for them, I don’t know how I would keep going.”
For Adrian, Father's Day is a cherished time to be with his family.
“I have a daughter who loves to cook and loves to make me a special breakfast on Father’s Day. My favorite thing, though, about Father’s Day is just to be around my family.”
As we celebrate Father's Day, let us extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the truck driver dads like Sam and Adrian, who embody strength, resilience, and unwavering dedication to their families and their careers. Your sacrifices do not go unnoticed, and at Boyd Bros., we appreciate you for all that you do.
