Boyd Celebrates Million Milers

Post Date - Jun 24, 2022

One of the biggest accomplishments a truck driver can ever achieve throughout their career is becoming a million-mile driver. This means that a driver has reached a million miles or more throughout their career without a single preventable accident. This task has become increasingly difficult in recent years as distracted driving is on the rise and requires a strong commitment to the job and a high level of professionalism.

Boyd is excited to announce that we recently celebrated four of our drivers reaching this amazing milestone. Congratulations to Bruce Davis, William Thompson, Alan Lawson and William Coleman for accomplishing this professional landmark! We are proud of your work and are so grateful you’re on the Boyd Bros. team.

So, what does it take to achieve this milestone? We sat down with William Coleman to get a little insight.

Coleman is one of our lease purchase drivers, and has been a professional driver for 21 years, the last 10 of which have been with us at Boyd. He has already paid off a truck with us and is now going through our lease purchase program again.

“I knew I wanted to drive flatbed because it was more money and less travel than a van driver,” says Coleman. “This job is like a paid vacation. The freedom, touring the world, going to different places, and learning about different people - it’s one of the best decisions I ever made.”

Achieving one million miles is a goal Coleman has always had in mind and he finally reached it in February.

“It felt really good. When you work at Boyd, the million-mile drivers are a big topic here,” he explains. “There’s a lot of support to help you get there and everything is there to celebrate with you when you make it.”

At Boyd, we like to celebrate big by throwing a party for our million mile drivers. We provided Bruce, William, Alan and William with lunch, a trophy, and other prizes, as well as a ceremony to recognize their achievement. Many of their families attend our celebration as well because we’ve all worked hard to support these drivers.

“Boyd was with me every step of the way,” Coleman said. “They knew I wanted to get to a million miles, and they helped me accomplish this by giving me the types of loads I wanted to run and helped me focus on safety.”

When Coleman is not on the road, he’s usually spending time with his wife of 38 years in their home in Alabama. His kids are all grown and two of them have followed in his footsteps by working in the trucking industry too.

“I just tell people to focus on being safe and just do one mile at a time,” he advises. “Just continually make sure you’re doing what you need to be doing to stay safe.”

The trucking industry as a whole has a high driver turnover rate, but at Boyd, we’ve been able to create a company that fosters an environment where drivers really thrive and build successful careers. This is why one out of every six Boyd Bros. drivers is a million mile driver just like William. We’re proud of the example they set for other drivers in our industry.
